Jonathon Jones

Jonathon Jones

Solicitor

Originally from Auckland, New Zealand, Jonathon recently relocated to the Gold Coast to continue his career in criminal law. Before entering the legal profession, he worked in customer service and information technology, gaining valuable experience in communication and problem-solving before realising that criminal law was his true vocation.

Jonathon commenced his legal studies at the University of Auckland in 2019, graduating with Honours and being admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2023. During his studies, he clerked for one of Auckland’s most respected criminal barristers within the New Zealand Public Defence Service. He also volunteered at the Auckland Community Law Centre and served as a student representative on the Criminal Law Committee of the Auckland District Law Society.

An accomplished legal researcher, Jonathon authored numerous papers on criminal law topics. His dissertation examined the sentencing process, and his article on bad character evidence was published in the New Zealand Law Journal.

Prior to joining Gatenby Criminal Lawyers, Jonathon conducted and prepared dozens of criminal trials during his two years of practice in New Zealand, and appeared in appeals before the higher courts. This experience has provided him with strong courtroom instincts and a practical understanding of advocacy at an early stage in his career.

Having found his calling later in life, Jonathon approaches his work with commitment, empathy and professionalism. He considers it a privilege to practise in a field he is passionate about and is dedicated to achieving outstanding results for his clients.

Outside of work, Jonathon enjoys spending time at Gold Coast beaches, following football, and reading.
